How to change the instance name?

Hello DBA's

I have installed SQL Server 2005 on a machine with named instance, but later I noticed that I created it with the wrong name than desired. Now I need to change the instace name of the SQL Server that I have installed. How can I do that

Thanks

Satya

There is not a supported way to rename an instance. You need to uninstall and then reinstall.

Thanks,

How to change the default backup data directory in SQL Server 2000?

Hi,

I had SQL Server 2000 installed like below:

Installation Directory = C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server

Default data directory = D:\

Default log directory = D:\

I found out that the data is stored in D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data and backup is done in D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\backup

However, Microsoft says we should never put the ..\backup and ..\data folders in the same partition.

My question is: How can I move the path of the backup directory?

I checked the registy but this is what I found:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer

..BackupDirectory=C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\backup (<-- note it is pointing to C:\ not D:\)

..DefaultData=D:\

Can somebody help please?

Hi,

As you reach to the correct part change the values of .BackupDirectory=<pathyouwanttoSoreBackUp>

or/and if you are using Schedule/Maintanance Plan you may specify the path their too.

How to change license type from Per Proc to CAL ?

We had a production server installed with a Per Processor license by mistake
and need to change it to 'per seat' ie CAL. Is there a way to do this without
reinstalling SQL on the server (as it is a production server now) ? The
'Choose Licensing Mode' in control panel has the 'per seat' option grayed out
and only allows to change the number of processor licenses.
Thanks.Hi

With a production server it is better to be safe as downtime could be
costly, but you could try http://tinyurl.com/25rvyo

how to change default data directory for SQL 2005

Hi, I've installed SQL 2005 and failed to change the default data
location during installation. Now I want to change it. Can I do this
without having to uninstall and reinstall? And furthermore, is there a
system stored procedure I can use to move existing data and log files
(master, msdb, AdventureWorks, etc.)? I seem to remember doing just
this with SQL 2000 some time back.

Thanks,
EricYou can specify the default database file locations using SQL Server
Management Studio. Right-click the server in the object explorer and select
Properties-->Database Settings.

The SQL 2005 Books Online includes detailed steps on moving database files.
There is a different procedure for system vs. user databases.

how to change collations to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS?

Hi,
I installed SQL Server 2000 SP3a on win2003 in English with the
collation Latin1_General_CI_AS.
Now I want to restore a DB with SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.
I am not really interested to reinstall SQL-server.
I tried the rebuildm.exe-tool but it couldn´t start because some
process was still using SQL-Server (I stopped everything I knew).
Is there a special query or a software-tool which can handle this
transformation?
thanks in advance,

They are not quite the same. Latin1_General_CI_AS uses Unicode sorting
rules for both Unicode and non-Unicode data. To see one difference (not
the only one), try the following:
IF 'a-c' COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS > 'ab' COLLATE
Latin1_General_CI_AS
PRINT 'Latin1_General_CI_AS: a-c > ab'
ELSE
PRINT 'Latin1_General_CI_AS: a-c < ab'
IF 'a-c' COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS > 'ab' COLLATE
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
PRINT 'SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS: a-c > ab'
ELSE
PRINT 'SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS: a-c < ab'

To use rebuildm.exe, make sure that the SQL Server service is fully stopped
(e.g. go to Computer Managment --> Services and stop anything named
"MSSQLServer" or "MSSQL$...").

Hello,
I read this chapter and it seems that I just have to create a new DB,
choose the right collation and restore the DB. The message is that
multiple collations are supported and a feature of SQL 2000.
But the fact is that I can't choose "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS"
while creating a new DB.
So what I did is I reinstalled SQL Server, changed regional-settings
to English(US), English (UK) for the local user.
Then I got the right collation.

Yes, but then you will have problems with temp tables, as they will be
created with the same collation as the master database by default.
You can get around this issue, by specifying
"collation database_default" for each character-type column when you
create your temp tables. Of course, that means you need to create them
up-front, and can't use Select ... Into #xxx From ... anymore.
cheers,
Ross.

How to change collation settings after install

I need to change the collation setting on a server which has already been
installed and setup. How do I do this?
Thanks.
moondaddy@.newsgroup.nospamIt depends on to what extent you want to change collation. The collation for system databases you
change using rebuildm.exe (2000) or setup (2005). See books online for details. This will rebuild
the system databases, so you need to recreate everything you need in the system databases.
A user database is a different thing...

I agree with Tibor. Just add some helpful links here for your reference.
For SQL 2000, please refer to:
How to rebuild the master database (Rebuild Master utility)
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa197950(sql.80).aspx
For SQL 2005, you may refer to:
Setting and Changing the Server Collation
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179254.aspx
How to: Install SQL Server 2005 from the Command Prompt
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259.aspx
Additionally if you would like to change your user database collation, you
can use ALTER DATABASE statement which is applicable for both SQL 2000 and
2005:
Setting and Changing the Database Collation

ALTER DATABASE (Transact-SQL)
